Set up and maintain a Google Business Profile with accurate details, the right category, helpful service information, and a trustworthy customer experience.
01. Check eligibility and use the correct account
Before creating a listing, confirm that the business has in-person contact with customers during its stated hours and fits Google’s current eligibility guidelines. Online-only businesses and virtual offices that are not staffed as required may not qualify. Use a Google Account controlled by the business owner or an authorized manager, keep recovery details current, and grant access through the profile’s user-management tools instead of sharing passwords. Search Google Maps first to check whether a profile already exists; requesting access to an existing listing is usually preferable to creating a duplicate.
02. Enter the real-world business name and location
Use the name customers see on the business’s signage and real-world materials. Do not add product, service, neighborhood, or city keywords unless those words genuinely form part of the name. Enter a precise address for a customer-facing location, or configure the profile as a service-area business if customers are served at their locations and they are not received at the listed address. Do not use a mailbox, coworking address, or unstaffed virtual office to appear in a market where the business has no eligible location.
03. Select categories and describe services accurately
Choose the category that best describes the business’s primary activity. Add other categories only if they describe services the same business actually provides; unrelated categories can confuse customers. Complete the service, product, or menu details that are available and relevant. Write a concise description that says what the business does, whom it serves, and what customers can expect. The description should help a person make a decision, not read like a list of search keywords or unsupported claims.
04. Verify the profile and review every customer-facing detail
Follow the verification options Google presents for the particular business; available methods are not identical for every profile. Once the profile is verified, check its hours, special hours, phone number, website, appointment links, and service-area information. Confirm that links open correctly on a mobile phone and that calls reach the right team. If the business moves, changes ownership, or updates how it serves customers, update the profile and related website information instead of creating another listing to preserve an old one.
05. Add genuine photos and keep customer expectations clear
Use current, original photos that show the real storefront, entrance, team, products, menu, or completed work. Choose clear images that help a first-time visitor recognize the location or understand the service. Avoid stock photos presented as the business, misleading before-and-after images, or visuals that reveal customer information without permission. Keep the profile’s photos aligned with what a customer will actually experience when they call, visit, or book.
06. Create a lightweight profile maintenance routine
Check the profile monthly and whenever a meaningful business detail changes. Review access permissions, opening hours, service details, customer questions, and new reviews. Ask customers for honest feedback without incentives or selectively soliciting only positive reviews, then respond without disclosing private information. Keep a short record of profile changes and business enquiries so you can tell whether updates improved clarity or customer experience. Google may update its interface and rules, so consult its current help documentation when a feature behaves differently.
